Chain Link Fence
Its maintenance-free qualities and long life expectancy make it an excellent choice when privacy isn’t a major concern. From a basic 4’ residential job to a maximum security prison, chain link fencing is one of the most versatile products sold.
There are many ways to customize a chain link fence. You can add barbed wire to the top or install privacy slats. Those are just two options available to turn your chain link fence into a customized fence.
You can also purchase a vinyl-coated chain link fence. These are available in black, green & brown (actually any color you want can be custom ordered for the right price) and this is an attractive alternative to the traditional galvanized chain link fence. This type of chain link fence is often used in combination with aluminum fencing; the colors help the fence to fade into the background.
Chain link fencing usually comes in 50 ft rolls which can be joined by “unscrewing” one of the end wires and then “screwing” it back in so that it hooks both pieces. Common heights of chain link fences include 3 ft, 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft, 7 ft, 8 ft, 10 ft, and 12 ft. Common mesh gauges are 9, 11, and 11.5. For tennis courts and ball parks, the most popular height is 10 ft. 12.5 gauge is usually for temporary fence set ups.

A Little More About Chain Link Fence
A chain link fence is made from a thick steel wire, which is woven into a pattern that is usually a diamond in shape. The diamond shape is the most widely used shape however there have been other chain link fence shapes created.
Chain link fence was first produced by Charles Barnard in 1844 when he made the world’s very first machine for industrial production of wire netting.
During the second-world-war in London, most of the fences made of steel near the parks were done away with, giving way for the chain-link fence. This helped chain-link fencing become famous, and it is now widely used for both residential and commercial purposes. It provides clear visibility, and high security as its pattern easily provides access control.
Uses For Chain Link Fence
A chain link fence is useful for a myriad of reasons. Mostly, it is used to contain pets in a certain premeasured area.
One of the good things about chain link fence is that you can customize its top with more protective measures or varying reasons such as to prevent intruders. Besides residential and commercial use, chain link fences are widely used in baseball stadiums as batting cages, backstops and for overall field fencing.
Another use of chain link fence is that it promotes security. A lot of people prefer the chain link fence to other types of fence because of cost concerns, especially merchants who want to have their assets and properties secured. It creates a barrier around a commercial business, residential home and larger industries making them secure. To keep off intruders, most institutions and business premises have erected chain link fences. One can use different fencing heights basing on their needs. More deterrents like barbed wire can also be used to prevent access to climbing. Barbed wire can come in 1, 2, & 3 strands.
It is widely applied in city and town parks and playgrounds particularly in areas or city streets where children chasing after a toy or a ball might get injured. Chain link fence is also used where children of different age groups are playing in order to separate them.
To tame some other domestic animals from going out you will find a chain link is a necessity. Animals such as goats and cows will cause huge destruction to the crops in the rest of a farm and a chain link fence can be used to deter them from accessing the farm.
This type of fence is used in constructing kennels for dogs and can still be used to reserve separate areas for small and large dogs.
In game parks and zoos, for instance, wild animals such as lions are enclosed with a chain link to allow a tourist have a clear view of the animal while ensuring the animal doesn’t get access to the tourists (Belant, 1998). The chain link, therefore, not only safeguards the wild animal enclosed but also ensures the safety of the human beings as well.
Chain link fence is also most preferably used where users have the need for temporary structures. The pattern used to make chain link fence makes it easy to roll it up and relocate to a different place. You can see this when a new building is being erected, the construction company will use temporary chain link to create an effective barrier.
What are the Advantages of Using Chain Link Fence?
One advantage of chain link fence is that it is affordable. With the necessary equipment in place, one can install it on their own without needing an expert to do it. It is, therefore, cost-effective to install and affordable to everyone. Most people will find it more cost effective to hire a company such as ours to put up their fence. We already have the necessary equipment manpower needed to erect your fence in the most efficient way possible. Check out a few of our pictures from recent jobs.
Another advantage of the chain link fence is its durability. The fence is bound to last for a longer period of time without needing to replace it. A well-made chain link fence will last 10-20 years depending upon its care. As with all structures it requires some maintenance and care.
The open spaces in the fence, allows the wind to penetrate through. This feature makes it hard for the fence to be fell by storm, strong winds or even snow. If it is properly installed, the chain link fence can last for over a decade. It is best if you do not know how or do not have the necessary tools to hire a reputable service company.
The fence also requires very little or no maintenance at all. In most cases, no maintenance is required as the fence is galvanized with steel. No painting or staining is needed to make it look good. Once it is installed, it will take years without rusting. The steel used in making it, helps it remain strong all through.
A chain link fence will rust if a dog or another animal repeatedly urinates on a certain spot. In these cases we can usually replace the affected area of the fence without having to replace the entire fence.
Another advantage to the chain link fence is that you can see through it. Families, for instance, whose homesteads are near the main road would prefer chain link fence so they can see visitors. Security guards need to see intruders approaching from far and chain link fence aids in this. When the fence is opaque, intruders are likely to lodge at the fence without being noticed by the guards.
Moreover, the chain link fence does not block light. Greenhouses, for instance, will not require an opaque fence because it will block light. Chain link fence does not create shade and is, thus, best for greenhouses. Farmers investing in greenhouses would go for the chain link fence first as it provides sufficient light, protection and is cost advantageous.
What are the Disadvantages of Chain Link Fence?
The disadvantages of chain link are few compared to the advantages. One major disadvantage is that it is easy to climb. The spaces present in the fences makes it easy to climb and to grip. This poses a security threat as intruders can easily access your yard through climbing. Intruders, however, can be prevented from accessing your homestead through adding barbed wire to the top of the chain link fence.
A chain link fence is also easily disassembled, with the right tools, by anyone with the knowledge of how chain link is made.
Another limitation of chain link fence is that it can deprive you of your sense of privacy. Anything you would want to keep away from the public eye is curtailed as every passerby can see what is happening in the homestead from afar.
Technical aspects of How to Install a Chain Link Fence
To install a chain link fence, a number of tools are needed. These include tape measure, level, pliers, wire cutters, sledge hammer, post hole digger, a wheelbarrow to transport concrete, a shovel to mix concrete, (or bags of concrete), a hacksaw or a pipe cutter and a fence stretcher. With these tools, installation of a fence becomes easy.
The installation of a chain link fence undergoes a series of steps as discussed below.
Firstly, one must survey the property lines. It is important to ensure that the boundary lines of the property being fenced are located. All posts should be at least 4 inches inside all property lines. This helps in avoiding the encroachment of adjoining property with foundations of concrete. If you wish to place your post onto another person’s property, that person must also sign a contract between Mid Tenn Fencing and all parties involved.
Secondly, one should identify and place the terminal posts. That is the gate post, corner and end posts. The length between the posts of the gate is determined by combining the allowance of the latches and hinges plus the accurate gate’s width.
Mostly single walking gates need 3 ¾ inches for latches and hinges while double driving gates need 5 ½ inches. Once this is done, the holes are dug. The terminal postholes should be dug about 30 inches deep and 8 inches in diameter.
Terminal posts are placed 2 inches above the fence fabric height while the line posts are placed two inches lower than the fence fabric height. The terminal post is surrounded in the hole using concrete, with the footings of the post crowned and sloped downwards to drain away the water.
The third procedure involves the identification and placement of line posts. After the footings from the terminal post are dry, in such a way that the posts have stabilized, a string is positioned outside the terminal post’s face and pulled 4 inches below.
The height of the line post is designed such that it is two inches lesser than the fabric height. The length between the terminal posts is then determined to guide in placing the line posts. The line posts are dug 24 inches deep and 6 inches wide. The line posts are then centered in the hole while ensuring that they are aligned with the terminal post’s center.
Like the terminal posts, a concrete is poured surrounding the line posts and sloping downward to drain away water.
The next stages of installing a chain link fence involve the application of fittings to terminal posts. Brace bands and terminal bands are placed on terminal posts after which one places caps on the terminal post.
This may then be followed by installing top rail that is placed on top of every line post. The top rail may be connected with a wedged end, with each rail end band tightened using the terminal post.
These final stages also involve hanging the fabric. Once the framework has been assembled, the fabric is unrolled on the ground near the fence line beginning from the terminal post. The fabric may also be stood up against the frame of the fence and then attached loosely to the top rail to hold it in place. The fabric is placed on the outside face of every post.
Another crucial stage is stretching the fabric. Here, a tension bar is inserted at the end of the fabric while a fence stretcher is attached to the bar. The tension ought to be kept in check when stretching the fabric. The fabric height should be about ½ inch above the top rail to guarantee appropriate height.
Having completed the entire fence, the last stage involves hanging the gate. On one of the gate post, male hinges are fixed upside down on the top hinge to avoid lifting off the gate. The female hinges, on the other hand, are fixed loosely on the gate frame in which they are linked to the male hinges. The installation process ends by ensuring that the gate top aligns with the fence top.
Your fence can be aligned either following the curvature of the ground or made to be straight across the top. If you align your fence where the top is straight there may be places, depending upon the ground, along the fence row where small children or animals can dig and crawl out. This placement is a personal preference.
