Ahhh, summertime. It is the season of cookouts, pool parties and outdoor get-togethers with family and friends. If you are hosting a function this summer, you want your outdoor space to be as comfortable and inviting as possible.

The current trend is to create an outdoor space that has the same comfort, look, and function of an indoor room. Some people achieve these looks through sleek outdoor kitchens filled with professional-quality appliances and high-tech gadgets, but you can get the same feel without breaking your budget by making a shrewd search for outdoor furniture and accessories that have the same comfort and function as living room furniture.

Here are a few tips to make sure your outdoor living space is at the pinnacle of both comfort and fashion this summer

  • Choose your color palette: Ocean-inspired color schemes are always a great choice for your outdoor space. Various shades of blue—such as navy, teal, and aquamarine—are always favorites and can be found on anything ranging from furniture to pillows, area rugs, and accessories such as umbrellas. Gray is also a popular choice for outdoor furniture; in a coastal or tropical-inspired palette, gray evokes images of rocky coastlines or driftwood. Feeling more adventurous? Spice up your color scheme with tangerine, or Caribbean-inspired hues such as bright yellow, lime green, and hot pink. These brighter colors add energy to your space; you even can paint wrought iron seating or dining sets these colors to breathe new life into older furniture.
  • Finding the right fabric: Not all outdoor fabrics are created equal. Seek out materials that require minimal maintenance. It also is a good choice to look for fabrics that resist water, UV rays, mold, mildew, and stains. This will keep your outdoor furniture inviting and comfortable for quite some time.
  • Be flexible: Flexible seating is the hot new trend in outdoor living spaces. That means having seating that can double as a dining area, or an area to just sit and visit. This flexibility allows you to add, subtract, and adjust pieces as needed for whatever size crowd you might be expecting at your next function.
  • Good seats still available: The current most fashionable seating materials are teak and wicker. Teak can be a little on the expensive side, but consider it a long-term investment in your outdoor space because of its strength and long-term durability. Teak is a perfect choice for an outdoor space because of its ingrained weatherproofing thanks to the naturally high quantities of oil and rubber in the wood. Teak will weather into a faded gray over time, but you can protect the new color of your seating by applying a sealant. Teak also has an understated elegance that adds an upscale feel to your deck or outdoor space. Wicker has been a fixture in outdoor spaces, summer homes, and lake houses for decades. Most popular in black, brown, and dark gray, wicker furniture adds texture and visual interest and is durable and easy to clean. Wicker refers to the weaving process used to construct the item, not any particular material. Any wicker item could contain any combination of natural and man-made materials as long as they are pliable enough to weave.
  • Fire up: It may not sound too appealing on a hot afternoon, but a fire accessory is both a trendy and useful addition to your outdoor space. Choose your fuel source—be it wood, propane, or natural gas—and you have both a heat source on chilly nights or a family marshmallow roast. Do some bargain shopping, and you can find fire accessories for as cheap as $50. If you want to add a fire element to your deck, consult the manufacturer for any guidelines or restrictions prior to making your purchase.
